# Elephas System Requirements for Mac and Windows

> Elephas runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 Sonoma or later and on 64-bit Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11. See memory and disk guidance for Local AI.

Elephas runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and on 64-bit (x64) PCs with Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11. Intel Macs, Windows on ARM, iPhone and iPad are not supported.

## Supported computers

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Mac">
    | Requirement | Supported |
    | - | - |
    | Operating system | macOS 14 Sonoma or later |
    | Processor | Apple Silicon (M1 or later) |
    | Intel Macs | Not supported |

    macOS itself will not open Elephas on a version older than macOS 14. To check your Mac, choose **Apple menu › About This Mac**. The **Chip** line should say Apple M1 or later, and the macOS version should be 14 or higher.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Windows">
    | Requirement | Supported |
    | - | - |
    | Operating system | Windows 10 version 22H2, or Windows 11 |
    | Processor | 64-bit Intel or AMD (x64) |
    | Windows on ARM | Not supported |

    To check your PC, open **Settings › System › About**. **System type** should say 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor. Under **Windows specifications**, the version should be 22H2 on Windows 10, or any Windows 11 version.

## Disk space

Plan for these pieces:

| What | Size | When |
| - | - | - |
| The Elephas app | About 130 MB download on Mac | When you install |
| On-device components for privacy protection, search, language detection and scanned-page text | About 50 MB | Downloaded once, the first time you open Elephas |
| Your library | Grows with your documents | As you add files |
| Local AI model (optional) | About 1.2 GB to 5.3 GB, depending on the model | Only if you choose Local AI |
| Extra scanned-page languages (optional) | About 4 MB each | Only if you add them |

Your documents stay stored on your computer, in your user folder. The search index and your chats are kept in an encrypted database. See [where your data is stored](/docs/privacy-and-security/where-your-data-is-stored).

## Memory for Local AI

Local AI runs a language model on your computer, so it needs more memory than the rest of Elephas. When you turn it on, Elephas suggests a model based on how much memory your computer has.

| Model | Download | Suggested for |
| - | - | - |
| Qwen 2B | About 1.2 GB | Any supported computer. Fastest, shorter answers. |
| Qwen 4B | About 2.6 GB | Computers with 8 GB of memory or more. |
| Qwen 9B | About 5.3 GB | Computers with plenty of spare memory, about 20 GB or more. |

If your computer does not have enough free memory for even the smallest model, Local AI shows **Not enough free memory on this computer.** You can still use Elephas AI or your own API key. Learn more in [choose a local model](/docs/ai-options/choose-a-local-model).

## Internet connection

You need an internet connection to:

* Download Elephas and its first-run components.
* Sign in, start your free trial and check your plan.
* Get answers with Elephas AI or your own API key.
* Download a Local AI model, use Personal Sync, and get updates.

Reading, indexing and searching your documents work without internet once setup is done. Local AI writes answers on your computer, but Elephas still needs to confirm your plan online from time to time. See [use Elephas offline](/docs/privacy-and-security/use-elephas-offline).

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Is there an iPhone or iPad app?">
    No. Elephas runs on Mac and Windows only. The iOS app you may know belongs to classic Elephas, which is a different product. See [moving from classic Elephas](/docs/getting-started/moving-from-classic-elephas).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why are Intel Macs not supported?">
    Several of the on-device components Elephas relies on for privacy protection and search no longer ship for Intel Macs. Rather than ship a version that would be slower and missing features, Elephas supports Apple Silicon only.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I use Elephas on Windows on ARM, such as a Surface with a Snapdragon chip?">
    Not yet. Some on-device components are only available for x64 Windows today.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does Elephas run on Linux?">
    No. Elephas supports macOS and Windows.
