# Device Limits on Each Plan

> How many computers you can use Elephas on with each plan, what This account is in use on another device means, and how to move your plan to another computer.

Personal and the free trial work on 1 computer, Professional on up to 3. If your plan is in use on another computer, you can move it with **Use This Device Instead**. Your documents are never deleted.

## Before you start

* You need to be signed in to your Elephas account on the computer you want to use. See [create your account and sign in](/docs/getting-started/create-account-and-sign-in).
* To move your plan, you need an active plan or trial.

## The limits

| Your account | Computers |
| - | - |
| Free trial | 1 |
| Personal plan | 1 |
| Professional plan | Up to 3 |
| Signed in with no plan, or plan ended | 1 |
| Team workspaces | No device limit |

The limit covers the AI features of your Personal workspace: Elephas AI, your own API key, Local AI and Personal Sync. Team workspaces on the same computer are not affected.

## Move your plan to this computer

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Plan & Billing">
    On Mac, choose **Elephas › Settings…** or press **⌘,**. On Windows, choose **File › Settings…** or press **Ctrl+,**. Then choose **Plan & Billing** and look at **Devices**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read what Elephas shows">
    If your plan has room, you see **Your plan has a free place for this device.** Click **Use This Device** and you are done.

    If not, you see **This account is in use on another device.** with the name of that computer, whether it is a Mac or Windows PC, and when it was added.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Use This Device Instead">
    On Professional with several computers, first choose the one to replace. Elephas asks **Use this device instead?** and explains: AI stops working on the other computer. Brains and files on it are not deleted.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name this computer and confirm">
    Check the **Name of this device**. It is shown on your other devices so you can tell them apart. If the old computer is lost or stolen, tick **That device is lost or stolen. Do not let it take the account back.** Then confirm.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Ask a question">
    Elephas shows **This device now uses your account. AI works here again.**
  </Step>
</Steps>

Click **Not Now** to leave things as they are. Elephas asks again the next time it starts or you open Plan & Billing.

## How it works

* **A place is taken by the first computer that uses AI.** Signing in alone does not take a place. A computer asks for one when you start the trial, turn on Elephas AI, use your own API key or Local AI, or turn on Sync.
* **Signing out does not free a place.** Use **Use This Device Instead** on the new computer instead.
* **A "device" is one installation with its data folder.** Reinstalling Elephas over the same data folder is the same device. Deleting the data folder makes it a new device.
* **Moving does not move your documents.** Your Brains and files stay on each computer. Nothing is deleted or uploaded by a move.
* **The old computer finds out the next time it is used.** It shows **Your account was moved to** followed by the new computer's name and the time. It stops Elephas AI at its next question, and stops your own key and Local AI within 60 minutes. It can take your plan back with **Use This Device Instead**, unless you ticked the lost or stolen box.
* **Without a place, the rest still works.** On a computer without a place, you can still open your Brains, add and search your documents and read old chats.
* **No email is sent** when your plan moves to another computer.

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="All your devices have Sync on">
    A computer with Personal Sync on can't be replaced from a new computer. Open Elephas on one of your synced computers, go to **Settings › Sync**, and remove the computer you no longer use. Then click **Check Again**. See [remove a device](/docs/sync-and-devices/remove-a-device).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="You moved your account N times in the last 30 days">
    Your account may be limited in how often it can move in 30 days. The message shows the date you can move again. The computer that joined your account first can always take it back.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="This device is registered to another Elephas account">
    Each installation belongs to one Elephas account. Sign in with the account you used on this computer before. You are not offered **Use This Device Instead** in this case.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="This device was removed from your account">
    The computer was marked lost or stolen, or removed in **Settings › Sync**. It can't use AI again. If this is a mistake, [contact support](/docs/troubleshooting/contact-support).
