# How to Delete Your Data and Elephas Account

> Delete your Elephas data from your Mac or Windows PC, including the data folder and stored keys, and learn how synced data and account deletion requests work.

<Warning>
  Draft. This article depends on an open product question and is not ready to publish.
</Warning>

Your documents, chats and index live on your computer, so you delete them by deleting them there: individual items inside Elephas, or everything by removing the Elephas data folder and its stored keys. Deleting your Elephas account is a separate request.

## Before you start

* Deleting local data cannot be undone. Keep your own copies of any original files you still need. Elephas has no export today.
* If you use [Personal Sync](/docs/sync-and-devices/personal-sync-overview), deleting data on one computer is different from deleting a Brain or document inside Elephas. See "Synced data" below.
* Signing out does not delete anything. After **Sign Out**, Elephas confirms: "Signed out. Nothing on this device was deleted, and Team content is locked until you sign in again."

## Steps

### Delete individual Brains, documents or chats

Inside Elephas you can delete a Brain, a document, or a chat. If Personal Sync is on, the deletion syncs to your other devices. See [Remove documents](/docs/brains-and-documents/remove-documents), [Create and manage Brains](/docs/brains-and-documents/create-and-manage-brains) and [Manage chat history](/docs/ask/manage-chat-history).

### Delete all Elephas data from a computer

There is no single "delete all data" button in Elephas today. To remove everything from one computer:

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Mac">
    <Steps>
      <Step title="Quit Elephas">
        Quit Elephas completely.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Delete the data folder">
        In Finder, choose **Go › Go to Folder**, paste `~/Library/Application Support/Elephas Next`, then move the **Elephas Next** folder to the Trash and empty the Trash.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Remove the stored keys">
        Open **Keychain Access**, search for "Elephas Next", and delete the entries you find. They hold the database keys, your sign-in session, any API keys you added, and sync device keys.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Remove the app (optional)">
        Drag Elephas from Applications to the Trash. See [Uninstall Elephas](/docs/getting-started/uninstall-elephas).
      </Step>
    </Steps>
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Windows">
    <Steps>
      <Step title="Quit Elephas">
        Quit Elephas completely.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Delete the data folders">
        Press Windows + R, enter `%APPDATA%`, and delete the **Elephas Next** folder. Then press Windows + R again, enter `%LOCALAPPDATA%`, and delete the **Elephas Next** folder there, which holds downloaded models.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Remove the stored keys">
        Open **Credential Manager** from the Start menu, choose **Windows Credentials**, and remove the entries that mention "Elephas Next".
      </Step>

      <Step title="Remove the app (optional)">
        Uninstall Elephas from **Settings › Apps**. See [Uninstall Elephas](/docs/getting-started/uninstall-elephas).
      </Step>
    </Steps>
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

Uninstalling the app on its own does not remove the data folder or the stored keys.

## How it works

### Local data

Everything Elephas knows about your documents is on your computer. See [Where your data is stored](/docs/privacy-and-security/where-your-data-is-stored). When you delete the data folder and the keys, that copy is gone. Your original files elsewhere on your computer are not touched.

### Synced data

If you use Personal Sync, your other approved devices keep their copies when you delete the data folder on one computer. To remove synced content everywhere, delete the Brains, documents or chats inside Elephas while Sync is on, or delete the data on each device. Data already on a revoked device cannot be erased remotely. See [Remove a device](/docs/sync-and-devices/remove-a-device).

The sync server holds only encrypted data that Elephas cannot read. See [Sync encryption](/docs/privacy-and-security/sync-encryption).

### Your Elephas account

Your account holds your sign-in, your plan and your devices. There is no account deletion option in the app today.

To request account deletion, email [support@elephas.app](mailto:support@elephas.app) from the email address on your account.

### Usage reports

If you allowed anonymous usage and error reports, they are tied to a random Install ID, not to your account. Turning reports off deletes any not yet sent. See [Usage reports](/docs/privacy-and-security/usage-reports).

  <Accordion title="Elephas shows my Brains again after I deleted the folder">
    If Personal Sync is on, signing in and joining Sync again downloads your synced data from your other devices. Delete the content inside Elephas first, or remove this computer from Sync.

    The leftover entries in Keychain or Credential Manager cannot unlock anything without the database files. Remove them anyway to finish the cleanup.
