# Elephas Settings: A Complete Guide

> A guide to every Elephas settings pane: Appearance, AI, Plan & Billing, Sync, Updates, Downloads, Privacy and Support, and what each one controls.

Settings is where you choose how Elephas looks, where AI runs, and how your account, sync, updates and downloads behave. Open it from **Settings** at the bottom of the sidebar, or press ⌘, on Mac or Ctrl+, on Windows.

## Open and close Settings

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Mac">
    * Click **Settings** at the bottom of the sidebar, or
    * choose **Elephas › Settings…**, or press ⌘, (Command and comma).
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Windows">
    * Click **Settings** at the bottom of the sidebar, or
    * choose **File › Settings…**, or press Ctrl+, (Control and comma).
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

Settings opens in the main window, on the pane you last used. Choose a pane from the list on the left. Press Escape, or click another place in the sidebar, to leave.

There is no Save or Done button. Every change applies as soon as you make it. The exceptions are fields you type into, such as an API key, which have their own **Save** button.

## The panes

| Pane | What it controls | Learn more |
| - | - | - |
| **Appearance** | Theme (System, Light or Dark), accent color, text size and reduced motion | [Appearance](/docs/settings/appearance) |
| **AI** | How Elephas answers: Elephas AI, your own API key, or Local AI. Also the **Protect personal information when using cloud AI** switch. | [Choose how Elephas answers](/docs/ai-options/choose-how-elephas-answers) |
| **Plan & Billing** | Your Elephas account, sign in and sign out, your plan, your free trial and what you have bought | [Plans and pricing](/docs/plans-and-billing/plans-and-pricing) |
| **Sync** | Personal Sync between your own computers, end-to-end encrypted, and your list of devices | [Personal Sync overview](/docs/sync-and-devices/personal-sync-overview) |
| **Updates** | Which version you are on, and **Check for updates** | [Update Elephas](/docs/getting-started/update-elephas) |
| **Downloads** | The on-device components Elephas needs, whether each one is here, and a way to download what is missing | [Manage downloads](/docs/settings/manage-downloads) |
| **Privacy** | Anonymous usage and error reports, and your Install ID | [Usage reports](/docs/privacy-and-security/usage-reports) |
| **Support** | The support email address, the help center, your log file and your version | [Contact support](/docs/troubleshooting/contact-support) |

Each pane shows a one-line summary under its name. On the **AI** pane, that line tells you which AI and model are in use right now.

### The AI pane and your privacy

The **AI** pane decides where your question and the matching passages from your documents go when you ask. You control where AI runs:

* **Elephas AI (included with your plan)** works with no setup.
* **My own AI account** sends requests directly to the provider you already use, with your key.
* **Local (on this computer)** runs a model on your computer.

Indexing happens on your computer whichever you choose. See [what data is sent to AI](/docs/privacy-and-security/what-data-is-sent-to-ai).

### The Downloads dot

If something Elephas needs is missing, a dot appears next to **Downloads** in the pane list, and a banner may say **Some features are unavailable until Elephas finishes downloading what it needs.** Open **Downloads** to see what is missing and fix it. See [manage downloads](/docs/settings/manage-downloads).

### Team Settings

If you are in a Team workspace, team administration is not in Settings. It is under **Team Settings** in the sidebar: members, devices, Team Brains, the AI policy, security and audit, recovery, and billing. Everyone in the Team sees the row. What you can change depends on your role. See [teams overview](/docs/teams/teams-overview) and [team roles and permissions](/docs/teams/team-roles-and-permissions).

## Shortcuts

| Action | Mac | Windows |
| - | - | - |
| Open Settings | ⌘, | Ctrl+, |
| Bigger text | ⌘= | Ctrl+= |
| Smaller text | ⌘- | Ctrl+- |
| Actual size text | ⌘0 | Ctrl+0 |
| Leave Settings | Escape | Escape |

See all [keyboard shortcuts](/docs/ask/keyboard-shortcuts).

## Troubleshooting

  <Accordion title="A setting did not stick after restarting">
    Elephas saves your settings in a file in its data folder. If that folder cannot be written to, settings may not be kept. Check your disk is not full, then restart Elephas. See [Elephas won't start](/docs/troubleshooting/elephas-wont-start).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Some features are unavailable">
    A downloaded component is missing. Click **Repair** on the banner, or open **Settings › Downloads**. See [manage downloads](/docs/settings/manage-downloads).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I can't find a setting for my Team">
    Team settings live under **Team Settings** in the sidebar, not in Settings. Some can only be changed by the Team Owner. See [Team AI policy](/docs/teams/team-ai-policy).
