# First-Run Download Failed: Offline, Proxy, Disk Full

> Fix a failed Elephas first-run download: no connection, Wi-Fi that needs sign-in, a proxy or firewall, a full disk, folder permissions or a second copy running.

The first time you open Elephas, it downloads about 50 MB of components that run on your computer. If that download stops, Elephas shows a message and a **Try again** button. Find your message below, fix the cause, then click **Try again**.

## Before you start

* You need an internet connection once, for this download. After it, reading, searching and protecting your documents work on your computer. See [first-run downloads](/docs/getting-started/first-run-downloads).
* You can keep going through the welcome steps while the download runs. Elephas only stops you when the download needs your help.
* If you are on a work network, you may need your IT team for the firewall step.

## Messages and fixes

| Message | Cause | Fix |
| - | - | - |
| **No internet connection. Elephas will keep trying, and will carry on as soon as you are back online.** | Your computer is offline. | Reconnect. Elephas continues by itself. |
| **This network wants you to sign in first. Open your browser, sign in, then try again.** | Hotel, airport, café or guest Wi-Fi that shows a sign-in page, or a proxy that answered instead of the download. | Open any website in your browser, complete the network's sign-in page, then click **Try again**. On a work network, see the firewall section below. |
| **A downloaded file did not arrive intact. Elephas will fetch it again.** | A file was damaged on the way, or changed by something on your network. | Nothing to do. Elephas downloads it again. If this repeats, your network may be altering downloads. See the firewall section. |
| **Not enough free space to finish setting up.** | Your disk is full or almost full. | Free up disk space, then click **Try again**. |
| **Elephas cannot write to its data folder.** | Your user account cannot write to the Elephas folders, or the disk is read-only. | Check the folder permissions (paths below), then click **Try again**. |
| **Another copy of Elephas is already setting up. Continue there.** | Elephas is open twice, for example in two user sessions or after a quick double launch. | Switch to the other Elephas window. If you cannot find one, quit Elephas everywhere, then open it once. |
| **The download service is unavailable right now.** | The Elephas download server could not be reached or did not answer. | Wait a few minutes and click **Try again**. If it continues, check your firewall, then [contact support](/docs/troubleshooting/contact-support). |

## Firewalls, proxies and work networks

Elephas downloads its components over HTTPS from `next.elephas.ai`. If your network uses an allow-list, ask your IT team to allow that host.

Networks that inspect HTTPS traffic, or proxies that need you to sign in, can stop the download or change the files. Elephas checks every file against a fingerprint built into the app and refuses anything that does not match, so a changed file is never used. It shows **A downloaded file did not arrive intact** or **This network wants you to sign in first** instead.

IT administrators can also pre-load the components so users skip this download. See [first-run downloads](/docs/getting-started/first-run-downloads#for-it-administrators).

## How it works

The download fetches four components: the private-information models, the search model, language detection, and text recognition for scanned pages. Each file is checked before it is used. If you click **Quit** during setup, Elephas asks **Quit now?** and resumes where it left off the next time you open it.

These components are what let Elephas read, search and protect your documents on your computer. Indexing happens on your computer. Always. Without the private-information models, Elephas will not send anything to a cloud AI. See [what data is sent to AI](/docs/privacy-and-security/what-data-is-sent-to-ai).

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Setup worked before, but now a banner says some features are unavailable">
    A component went missing after setup. Elephas still opens your library and shows **Some features are unavailable until Elephas finishes downloading what it needs.** Click **Repair**, or open **Settings › Downloads** and click **Download** next to the missing item. See [manage downloads](/docs/settings/manage-downloads).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The setup screen offers Continue without them">
    You only see this if you already have a library on this computer. Continuing opens your library, but the features that need the missing components stay off until you download them from **Settings › Downloads**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Nothing above works">
    [Contact support](/docs/troubleshooting/contact-support) and attach your log file. It records which step failed, with no document text in it.
