What are ChatGPT Projects?
ChatGPT is already well known to everyone. For a quick recap, it is built by OpenAI, and it is an AI Chatbot just like Claude. It is one of the key players in the AI industry, and it is also the one that started the AI revolution in 2022.
Although ChatGPT is known by many, the ChatGPT projects feature is rather new and very similar to the Claude projects we've seen before.
In the ChatGPT projects, you create a knowledge base using different PDFs, research papers, or documents, and when we chat within that particular ChatGPT Project, all the responses will be based on the uploaded documents or the knowledge base we created.
So, because all the outputs are based on the knowledge base, the hallucinations or false outputs are reduced, and ChatGPT becomes best at a particular topic, such as your writing documents or your architecture plans, etc.
Ex: You can upload all of your architecture plans in PDF format to ChatGPT and ask it to give suggestions on how to make them better, what changes should be made, or even ask it to design the entire architecture. As it knows everything about your tastes, preferences, and the structure using the knowledge base, it gives the best output.

Practical Test: Claude Projects vs ChatGPT Projects
To actually know which LLM model is performing the best, we are going to test both the LLM models against research and information retrieval tasks. We are going to upload some documents on both the platforms and we are going to see which performs better in summarization or explaining the topic and also how well a specific information can be retrieved in each LLM model.
It should be noted that in ChatGPT projects, we can only upload documents, but in Claude, we can also upload copied text into the knowledge base, so we can also add webpage content into Claude projects.
But to be fair, we are only going to include research papers in both the platforms and see which performs the best. For both the tests, we are going to use research papers on the topic “How diffusion models work“.
We can also give custom instructions for which LLM model on how they should give replies, but we are not going to give any custom instructions to them and see which performs better in their default settings.
Research Tasks
For the research task, we are going to include three major research papers we found online, and as you can see in the image below for Claude, we have almost used the entire knowledge base. But in ChatGPT projects, we didn't get any such type of indication bar on how much storage we used in the knowledge base.
First, we asked both models to summarize, as we usually do in all of our LLM models comparison articles.
For summarization, Claude Projects is much better than ChatGPT; we cannot even compare both LLM models' results.
ChatGPT just gave a summary of each research paper when asked for a complete summarization, and also, for some research papers, it gave who contributed to the papers instead of giving a summary of the research paper.
Then I chatted with both the LLM models on the topic of what they are actually useful for.
When answering individual questions, both the LLM models were pretty good, but ChatGPT performed a little better. It explained where the Diffusion model works and also gave a clear example, whereas Claude gave a normal list of fields where it can be used.

In the research task when it comes to summarization, ChatGPT projects are not really good compared to Claude projects.
But when it comes to chatting with the LLM models and understanding the topic, ChatGPT is a little better, but both models were equally good.
Information Retrieval
In information retrieval tasks, both models showed some interesting outputs. So, to test both models' efficiency, I took a contributor to one of the research papers in the references and also gave a fake name that isn't in the research papers.
At first, both the models weren't able to find the reference, but when I asked only for the right person's name (Bradley Efron), then both the models were able to find the name. But I checked again by creating a new conversation in the same project and asked the same question.
This time, Claude Projects did find it even when given a wrong name along with the correct name, but ChatGPT Projects said there are no such persons.
There is an inconsistency in ChatGPT project outputs compared to Claude projects, and because of this inconsistency, it might not be a perfect fit for referencing or citing tasks.
Differences between Claude Projects vs ChatGPT Projects
Although it may seem like Claude projects and ChatGPT projects are very similar, there are actually a lot of major differences between them.
One of them is Context Window.
Claude projects have a context window of 200,000 tokens, whereas ChatGPT projects only have 128,000 tokens, which may not seem like a lot, but when it comes to actual usage, we can upload more files and also Claude remembers our chat longer compared to ChatGPT because of a higher context window.
The second major difference between Claude projects and ChatGPT projects is in image generation. In ChatGPT projects, we can create images like infographics, charts, etc., based on the knowledge base we created, whereas in Claude projects, we don't have any such feature, which can be very beneficial to people who want to have a visual understanding of their knowledge base.
And then we have privacy differences. In Claude, there is a default privacy setting that the information provided or chatted with Claude Projects is not used to train future models. But whereas in ChatGPT, we have to manually opt out to not share or use our information, like chats or documents we shared in the chats, to not use it to train the new models, or we have to take the Team's plan to automatically opt out.
These are the major differences between them; then we have minor differences, especially in projects of both models such as no indication bar on how much storage is used in the knowledge base in ChatGPT projects, and in the Claude projects, we don't have any feature to add previous chats to the projects and make it a part of the knowledge base, but in ChatGPT projects, we can.
