Elephas

Common Issues

Solutions for the most frequently reported issues with Elephas: Super Command not working, slow AI, missing citations, billing, and permissions.

Super Command does not appear

If pressing Ctrl + Space does not open Super Command:

  • Check that Elephas is running (look for the icon in your menu bar). You can also press Ctrl + Cmd + B, which opens the Super Brain window if Elephas is running
  • Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility and make sure Elephas is enabled. If Elephas is not in the list, click + → Applications → Elephas to add it, then restart Elephas
  • Check if another app is using the same keyboard shortcut. Try changing the shortcut in Elephas Settings
  • Restart Elephas (and restart your Mac if it is still unresponsive)

Menu bar icon missing

  • Confirm Elephas is running by pressing Ctrl + Cmd + B — if the Super Brain window opens, the app is running but the icon may be hidden
  • If your menu bar is full, macOS hides overflow icons. Quit a few other menu bar apps to make room
  • If the icon disappeared after an update, fully uninstall Elephas, remove leftover data (a tool like CleanMyMac helps), then reinstall

Continue Writing isn't working

Continue Writing extends an incomplete thought. If your sentence is already complete (it ends with a period or question mark), there is nothing for Elephas to continue, so it may do nothing.

  • Leave the sentence open instead of ending with . or ?
  • End with an ellipsis or a natural pause, e.g. “I was thinking about…”
  • Keep creative prompts open-ended so the model has room to continue

iCloud / Super Brain sync issues

Super Brain stores its files in iCloud Drive so they sync across your Macs. If sync fails or a Brain errors:

  • Check your iCloud storage in System Settings > [your name] > iCloud
  • Turn off Optimize Mac Storage so Brain files stay on the Mac rather than being offloaded
  • Make sure you have enough free disk space
  • If iCloud is turned off, Elephas uses the local Documents directory instead
  • If a Super Brain still errors, try creating a new Brain (see Workspace Configuration)

AI responses are slow

  • Offline AI: Larger models take longer to respond. Try a smaller model in Settings
  • Cloud AI: Response time depends on the AI provider and your internet connection. Check your connection
  • Large workspaces with many documents may take slightly longer for the initial search step

Elephas is not citing my documents

  • Make sure the relevant documents are indexed in the workspace you are querying
  • Check that indexing completed (look for a green status indicator next to each file)
  • Your question may not match the content of your documents. Try rephrasing

App crashes or freezes

  • Make sure you are running the latest version of Elephas
  • Restart the app. If the issue persists, try removing and re-adding the problematic workspace
  • Contact support via the in-app Crisp chat or email if the issue continues

Subscription and billing

  • Upgrading your plan: If you bought Elephas directly (website or Gumroad), upgrade under Preferences → License. This tab is only shown for direct purchases — Setapp and Mac App Store users won't see it and instead manage their plan in Setapp or in their Apple account.
  • "You exceeded your current quota": This is an OpenAI billing error, not an Elephas limit. See You Exceeded Your Current Quota.
  • Canceling: Mac App Store — System Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions. Setapp — in the Setapp app. Direct/Gumroad — see Billing, Plans & Credits or email support@elephas.app.

For full details on plans, credits, and managing a subscription, see Billing, Plans & Credits.

Permissions and automation errors

  • "Cannot send Apple Events": Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation and enable Elephas for the relevant apps
  • "Elephas can't control app": Enable Automation as above. Note Elephas only appears under Automation after you click Allow on the first permission prompt. If it is stuck, reset the permission in Terminal with tccutil reset AppleEvents com.kamban.elephas and relaunch Elephas to re-trigger the prompt. If it still fails, reboot, or delete and reinstall Elephas
  • Presentation / Keynote error: Enable Keynotespecifically under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation > Elephas
  • Accessibility permission: Required for Super Command and text editing. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility and enable Elephas (add it with + if missing)
  • Allow JavaScript from Apple Events: Needed in some browsers, not just Safari. Safari: Develop menu > Allow JavaScript from Apple Events. Arc: View > Developer > Allow JavaScript from Apple Events
  • "That model does not exist": Appears when using the code write/understand feature. It means your OpenAI account needs Codex access for that model — enable it on your OpenAI account
