You Exceeded Your Current Quota

The 'You exceeded your current quota' error comes from OpenAI billing, not Elephas. Switch to the Elephas AI engine, or add billing to your OpenAI account.

What the error means

The message “You exceeded your current quota. Please check your plan and billing details.” comes from OpenAI, not from Elephas. You see it when Elephas is set to use the OpenAI engine with your own API key, and that OpenAI account has no active billing or has hit its usage limit.

The simplest fix: use the Elephas AI engine

Switch Elephas to the built-in Elephas AI engine instead of OpenAI. It needs no separate API key or billing, and for most people it is the easiest path. You can change this in AI Provider Configuration. For fully private, on-device processing, see Offline AI.

If you want to keep using your own OpenAI key

A ChatGPT subscription and OpenAI API access are two separate things with separate billing — paying for ChatGPT does not give your API key any credit. To use your own key:

  1. Activate a paid OpenAI account: add a payment method at platform.openai.com/account/billing. You can set a low monthly limit (for example $5) if you like.
  2. New paid accounts are rate-limited by OpenAI for roughly the first 48 hours, so a brand-new key may still fail at first. Wait, then try again.
  3. If it still fails, delete the old key and create a new one at platform.openai.com/api-keys, then re-enter it in Elephas.
