Perplexity Computer Review (2026): What It Actually Does, What It Costs, and Who It's For
Last updated: October 8, 2026
If you sign NDAs, the question is what happens to client files you hand Perplexity's agent. Since May 2026, its Mac app can read files on macOS 15 or later; on September 1, Perplexity launched Hybrid Compute to keep some private-file steps local.
This Perplexity Computer review checks how safe it is near client files and what a real month costs.
Quick answer
- Computer is an AI agent that plans multi-step jobs across models and apps and returns finished files.
- Perplexity Pro ($20/month) has no recurring credits, only a one-time 4,000 bonus; Perplexity Max ($200/month) includes 10,000 a month.
- Only Hybrid Compute runs private-file steps on your Mac, and it needs 24 GB.
- Verdict: strong for research, a weak fit for client files without a written data policy and human review.
- Elephas is a private AI knowledge assistant for Mac that redacts sensitive data before it reaches cloud models. It has a free plan, paid plans from $19/month, and every new download includes 7 days of Pro.
What Is Perplexity Computer?
Perplexity Computer is an agentic AI tool from Perplexity AI that plans a multi-step workflow and splits it into subtasks. It uses your tools and files and returns a finished report, spreadsheet, deck or app.
Perplexity's AI search and AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude answer you; Computer does the work and hands back the file. Perplexity says its multi-model AI routes work across more than 20 models and 400+ apps.
Perplexity Personal Computer vs Hybrid Compute vs Portable Computer
| Version | Where the work runs | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Computer | Perplexity's cloud | Spends credits |
| Personal Computer | Mac app (Windows too) links your files, apps and Comet browser; agent runs in the cloud | Local access, not local processing |
| Hybrid Compute | Cloud, plus flagged private-file steps on a local model | Apple silicon, 24 GB; Pro, Max, Enterprise |
| Portable Computer | Fully local on your PC | 24 GB+ NVIDIA GPU or AMD Ryzen AI Max; not Mac |
A Mac user gets Personal Computer, plus Hybrid Compute with 24 GB; the fully local Portable Computer runs on Windows PCs and the Linux DGX Spark, not macOS.
Perplexity announced the Mac version in March 2026 for a dedicated Mac mini. It was waitlist-only then; Pro has access today.
How Does Perplexity Computer Work?
Computer turns one prompt into a plan and sends each subtask to a suitable model or app. The plan starts in Perplexity's cloud, and Computer can send files it reads to the cloud models.
- Any question that pulls pieces of your files into a cloud model's prompt sends them to the model provider; we call this RAG context window leakage.
- On a Mac, the setup guide has you approve Accessibility, Screen Recording and Full Disk Access permissions, then pick folders. Nothing in those permissions stops the agent acting on files or apps you never intended; the folders set what it can touch, and Perplexity says it only sees what you connect.
- Perplexity says "every sensitive action requires explicit approval," so you approve steps mid-run and check the result, while Computer handles the AI orchestration.
Perplexity Computer Pricing: What Does a Real Month Cost?
Computer costs $20 a month on Pro or $200 on Max with 10,000 credits a month.
- Pro has no recurring credits, only a one-time 4,000-credit bonus (30 days). Once it runs out, you'd need Max or bought credits.
- Credits are the real price: 100 equal $1, and one task can use 100 to 9,800 (Perplexity's credit guide, checked October 5).
- Max has a $200 default cap, adjustable to $5,000 (credit guide). Set yours early to stop cost runaway.
| Plan | Price | Recurring credits | One-time bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | None | None |
| Pro | $20/month | None | 4,000 (30 days) |
| Max | $200/month | 10,000 a month | 35,000 (30 days) |
| Enterprise Pro | $40/seat/month | 500 a month | 8,000 (30 days) |
| Enterprise Max | $325/seat/month | 15,000 a month | 40,000 (30 days) |
We don't have an account, so these are third-party figures. DataCamp tested Perplexity Computer on a research memo: 7 minutes 59 seconds and 225.71 credits.
| Source and date | Task | Credits and time | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity guide, October 5 | Light, complex, heavy, mega | 100-350 / 350-950 / 875-2,275 / 2,400-9,800 | Vendor examples, not guarantees |
| DataCamp, May 8 | Research memo | 225.71 credits ($2.26) | Verify facts; runs vary |
| Builder.io, March 4 | Two-day coding attempt | "$200 in compute credits" | Install failed; site worked eventually |
Is Perplexity Computer Safe for Client Files?
Computer isn't safe for client files by default. In Hybrid Compute, when a task includes client files, Perplexity's on-device PII classifier (PII-Tracer) decides what leaves your Mac; you choose only when it flags a file. Planning stays in the cloud.
- On a flagged file, "Upload anyway" sends it as is. Hybrid's on-device filter swaps names, addresses and account numbers for stand-ins and restores them. But Perplexity says "a missed mention may still be transmitted." If it misses a client name, your confidentiality duty still applies. No Hybrid Compute page we read promises a log of what left the Mac.
- PII-Tracer is a 0.6B on-device model, small enough for a Mac. In Perplexity's synthetic test, it scored highest of 12 AI systems at marking the exact characters of personal data (0.629 out of 1).
- Full Disk Access is a system grant, and Brave showed in 2025 that hidden web text could steer the Comet browser.
- If you use Perplexity on a consumer plan, the privacy notice lists improving its models as a purpose; Enterprise terms say data never trains models.
Runs Locally on a Mac: The 16 GB Answer
Hybrid Compute on Mac runs only flagged private-file steps on a local model; planning and web search stay in the cloud. On a 16 GB Mac, below the 24 GB it needs, you get the Mac app, not the local model.
Perplexity's PII-TRACE post says PII-Tracer caught every mention of 79.4% of repeated names and numbers; about 21 in 100 had one slip through.
On that test, a general-purpose AI model, GPT-5.6-sol, managed only 57.0%.
Under ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 29, 2024), lawyers must weigh the risk that client information reaches outsiders, and boilerplate isn't informed consent. NYC Bar Association Formal Opinion 2024-5 says to make sure it isn't used "to train or improve its product" without informed client consent. That professional duty stays with you.
Perplexity Computer vs Claude and OpenClaw: Which Fits Better?
Computer, Anthropic's agent (formerly Cowork) and OpenClaw differ in who runs the infrastructure.
- Perplexity uses multiple AI models, picked per subtask by default.
- If you use Claude Code, compare Anthropic's agent too.
- OpenClaw is free, self-hosted software, so model costs and security are on you.
| Option | Price | Setup and data path |
|---|---|---|
| Computer (Perplexity) | Pro $20, Max $200, plus credits | Managed cloud, many models |
| Anthropic's agent, formerly Cowork | Pro $20/month, Max from $100/month (rolling out to Pro and Max) | Anthropic's cloud, one model family |
| OpenClaw | $0 software; models extra | Your machine; you own security |
Prices checked October 5: Anthropic, OpenClaw FAQ. Deeper: Cowork alternatives, OpenClaw alternatives.
None of the 3 wins on every column; the best AI pick depends on your data path.
Is There a Better Fit for Confidential Work?
For NDA files, case notes or unpublished research, Elephas indexes them on your Mac, and optional local models let you work fully offline.
When client work still needs a cloud model, Elephas adds a second layer through automatic PII redaction. It redacts 28 types of sensitive data, from names and emails to account numbers and case numbers, on your Mac before any cloud call. Sensitive data is automatically detected and redacted before anything reaches a cloud AI model. Elephas's built-in cloud AI, powered by OpenAI and Anthropic models, runs with zero data retention: providers do not log, store, or train on what is sent. You can also bring your own API key from 15+ providers, including OpenAI, Claude and Gemini.
| Perplexity Hybrid Compute | Elephas optional local models | Elephas cloud AI after redaction | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the work runs | Cloud planning; flagged steps local | Your Mac, fully offline | OpenAI and Anthropic models (zero data retention) or your own key |
| What leaves the Mac | Task text with stand-ins, files you approve, missed mentions | Nothing | Redacted content |
| Hardware | Apple silicon, 24 GB | A Mac on macOS 13+ | A Mac |
| Starts at | Pro $20/month | Pro+ plan (pricing) | Free; from $19/month |
- Trade-off: Elephas works on your documents and doesn't run jobs across hundreds of apps.
- Mac, iPhone and iPad today; Windows coming soon (join the waitlist).

Is Perplexity Computer Worth It? The Verdict
Computer is worth it for research-heavy AI workflows when you can review every output and accept variable costs.
In IBM cost of data breach 2024 data, the average breach cost $4.88 million, and IBM's 2026 edition puts it at $4.99 million, up 12% on 2025.
IBM's 2025 study of 600 breached organizations found 63% had no AI governance policy or were still drafting one (IBM).
| Reader | Verdict | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Solo consultant | Good for research and decks | Keep client files out; budget per run |
| Lawyer | Not for client files by default | ABA 512 and NYC Bar duties apply |
| Researcher | Strong for public sources | Verify every figure |
| Small firm | Pilot Computer for Enterprise Pro | No-training terms, but 500 credits a month cover only one to five light runs |
- Computer is a cloud-based AI agent for research you can check.
- For client files, you need a written data policy first, built on GDPR's data minimization rule, Article 5(1)(c): share only what a task needs.
- If client files are the reason you keep looking, Elephas is a privacy-friendly AI knowledge assistant with optional local models and redaction before any cloud model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Computer free?
No, not as an ongoing plan. Perplexity offers some eligible US accounts a few included Computer turns without a paid plan (September 21 changelog). The Pro plan adds a one-time 4,000-credit bonus, worth $40.
Does Computer run locally on a Mac?
Partly. With Apple silicon and 24 GB of memory, Hybrid Compute runs flagged private-file steps on your Mac; planning and searches stay in the cloud. A 16 GB Mac can link files to the cloud agent but can't run the local model.
How much does Computer cost a month?
You'll pay $20 a month on Pro with no recurring credits, or $200 on Max with 10,000 credits a month. Credits are 100 per $1: a light task of 100 to 350 credits costs $1 to $3.50, a heavy one $8.75 to $22.75.
What can Computer do?
It runs research, builds reports, decks and spreadsheets, does data analysis and works across 400+ apps. Research is its strongest use case, since you can check sources. Coding is riskier: a reviewer who tried Perplexity for two days at Builder.io hit a failed install.
What happens when credits run out?
Runs that exceed the spending cap or your credits pause unfinished, and you can buy more. Perplexity restores credits when a task fails because of an error on its side, not when you didn't like the result.
Does Computer run on Windows?
Yes. Personal Computer reached Perplexity's Windows app on July 28. Portable Computer launched on Linux August 25. It reached Windows PCs with an NVIDIA RTX GPU (24 GB VRAM or more) on September 14, and AMD Ryzen AI Max PCs on September 24.
