Claude API Credits: How to Use Your Free $100 to $200 Before It Expires
Last updated: October 8, 2026
Anthropic started adding free monthly Claude API credits to its Max and Team plans this week: Max 5x gets $100 and Max 20x gets $200 a month. Catches: the money is not in your chat window, it expires each cycle, Pro gets nothing, and you must link a developer account first.
Executive Summary
- Max and Team plans now include monthly Claude API credits: $100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x, and $20 or $100 a seat on Team, pooled up to $500.
- Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible for these credits.
- The balance pays for developer use of Claude, such as the Messages API, Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, but not for interactive Claude Code.
- You claim it on the claude.ai website by linking one Claude Console organization, and any unused balance expires at the end of each billing cycle.
- Elephas gives non-developers an everyday app to use a Claude key in, with 28 types of sensitive data redacted on your Mac before each cloud call.
Who Gets Claude API Credits, and How Much
Anthropic's Help Center page lists a monthly grant of $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x, while Team plans get a set amount for each seat.
Source: Claude Help Center, October 2026
| Plan | Monthly Claude API credit |
|---|---|
| Max 5x | $100 |
| Max 20x | $200 |
| Team Standard seat | $20 per seat |
| Team Premium seat | $100 per seat |
| Team pool limit | Capped at $500 a month |
| Free, Pro, Enterprise | Not eligible |
Team seats add up into one shared balance: $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, capped at $500 a month. Three Standard seats and two Premium seats come to $260. A 40-person team still stops at $500.
- You need 7 days on an eligible plan and an account in good standing before the grant appears.
- Annual subscribers still receive it monthly, not as one yearly lump.
- Upgrading from Max 5x to Max 20x gives you prorated credits right away, then $200 each billing cycle after that.
- If you cancel, downgrade or get a refund, new grants stop, but the balance you have stays usable until it expires.
- Discounted Team plans for nonprofits and scientists get the same per-seat amounts.
Max 20x gives one person the largest grant, but it only pays off if you will spend $200 of API calls a month. Pro gets nothing: Free, Pro and Enterprise are not eligible, while a Team Standard seat gets a real $20.
What the Credits Cover and What They Do Not
On Max 5x, Max 20x and Team, Claude API credits sit in the Claude Console, the developer side of Anthropic. They are separate from your claude.ai usage limits, and nothing is ever charged to your plan. The credits do not change your usage limits in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork.
What the credits pay for
- The Claude API, meaning the Messages API (the basic way a program sends a question to Claude) and the Message Batches API (for sending many requests in one go)
- The Console Playground, where you can test prompts in a browser
- Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK (Anthropic's toolkits for building your own AI agents)
- Any available Claude model on the Claude Platform
What they do not pay for
- Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, an IDE, the desktop app or the web
- Claude Code runs started from the GitHub Action or the IDE extension
- Extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork
- Claude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry
- The Agent SDK credit announced earlier this year, which Anthropic paused; the credits FAQ says that credit "isn't available"

Max subscribers will notice the Claude Code gap most. The single exception is claude -p, the command that runs Claude Code as a one-off job. With an API key from your linked Console organization it bills to the grant as Agent SDK usage. Signed in with your plan, it uses plan limits, as before.
How to Claim Free Claude API Access and Get Your Key
On Max 5x, Max 20x and Team, the grant lives in your Console organization, not in the claude.ai chat window. The Console Playground draws from it directly. Anthropic's Help Center says calls made with an API key from that organization should draw from it.

- You can link only one Console organization and cannot change it yourself, so choose carefully; fixing a mistake means contacting support.
- Each organization takes credits from only one plan, and if you move from Max to Team, the link from your Max plan ends.
- Anthropic suggests signing in to the Console with the same email you use on claude.ai.
- No payment method is needed: Anthropic says you do not have to add a card on Claude Platform to claim or use the grant.
The Help Center lists these claim steps:
- On claude.ai, go to Settings > Billing as a Max subscriber, or Organization settings > Billing as a Team Owner or Primary Owner.
- In the API credits section, select "Link organization."
- Choose the Console organization that should receive the credits, or create a new one.
- Review the Supplemental Credit Terms, then select Link organization.
Your credits appear in that organization's balance, ready to use. Next, create the key. Sign in to the Claude Console (console.anthropic.com, also reachable at platform.claude.com), open that organization, go to API keys and click Create key. Settings > Billing shows the balance and expiry date.
- On Max the subscriber claims it, and on Team it is the Primary Owner or an Owner.
- Inside the Console organization, you need the Owner, Admin or Billing role to link it.
- You can subscribe on the web, iOS or Android, but you claim on claude.ai in a web browser.
Buying More Claude API Credits on Top
You can buy Claude API credits on top, and the free grant is spent first. So a later purchase never wastes the free money.
- The free monthly balance is used up before any API credits you have bought.
- When it runs out, API requests stop until next month unless you purchase more or turn on auto-reload. Auto-reload watches only your purchased balance, so it can charge you even while free credits remain.
- Check the Console billing page before you add any payment method.
What Should You Spend Claude API Credits On?
Unused balance expires each billing cycle, with no rollover. Using Anthropic's official price list, where Sonnet 5.5 costs $2 in and $10 out per million tokens, we sized a document question at 3,000 tokens in and 500 out (a token is a short chunk of text, often part of a word).
- Sonnet 5.5 ($2 in, $10 out per million tokens): about 9,000 requests for $100, or about 300 a day over a month. $200 covers about 18,000.
- Claude Opus 5.5 ($4 in, $20 out): about 4,500 requests for $100 and about 9,000 for $200.
- Cheap Haiku 5.5 ($0.10 in, $0.50 out): about 180,000 requests for $100 and about 360,000 for $200, so routine tasks barely dent the balance.
- Batch jobs cost half price, which suits overnight summaries of large folders.

Pick one daily task, such as asking questions of your own files, and run it through an app that accepts your own key. Anthropic prices each model per million tokens, so a cheaper model for routine work keeps API costs low. Check the Console balance after week one.
Use Your Claude Key in Elephas, With Redaction First
Elephas is an AI knowledge assistant for Mac, iPhone and iPad that takes your own key and redacts private data first. Create a key in the Console, paste it in Settings under AI Provider > Claude (the Bring Your Own Key part), then pick a model. The Elephas doc suggests Claude Sonnet for everyday use.

- Your Claude key powers Super Chat over Super Brain, so you ask questions of your own indexed files and get answers with citations back to the source.
- It also runs Agents and Workflows (beta), which handle multi-step jobs like summarizing the files in a Brain or drawing a timeline chart.
- You choose which model each feature uses.
- Anthropic says everyone with an API key in the linked organization draws from the same balance, so a key from that organization used in Elephas should draw from it too. Confirm it in Console > Settings > Billing after your first few questions.
- A key from any other Console organization bills at normal rates, not to the grant.
Every API call still sends your text to Anthropic's servers, so the grant pays for the call but does nothing for privacy. Elephas applies automatic PII redaction to 28 types of personal data, from names and emails to account numbers and case numbers, on your Mac before any cloud call.
- With your own key, retention follows your Anthropic account terms. Only Elephas's built-in cloud AI runs with zero data retention, which means providers do not log, store, or train on what is sent.
- Optional local models are there for fully offline work on your most sensitive files.
- You can switch to any of the 15+ supported providers, including OpenAI, Claude and Gemini, or change models, from the same settings screen.
- Elephas runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad, and a Windows version is coming soon (join the waitlist).
- For the wider picture, read the sensitive data guide.
What to Watch Next
Anthropic says it is rolling out the credits over a few days, so a missing API credits section now may simply mean you are early. Watch whether Anthropic widens eligibility, since Pro is the obvious gap.
- Pro users have nothing to claim yet, since no eligibility change has been announced.
- Check your balance in the first week of every cycle and set a small budget per task.
- Recheck the Help Center article, which Anthropic updated this week.
- Try your Claude key in Elephas for one daily task, with sensitive details redacted before they leave your Mac.
Claude API Credits FAQ
How do I use Claude API credits?
Link a Claude Console organization from claude.ai Settings > Billing (or Organization settings > Billing on Team), then create an API key in that organization. Anthropic says calls made with that key should draw from the balance, as does the Console Playground. It appears only after 7 days on an eligible plan.
How many credits does Claude give you?
Max 5x gets $100 a month and Max 20x gets $200. Team plans get $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one balance capped at $500 a month. Annual plans receive it monthly, not as one yearly lump, and your Console billing page shows the amount.
Do Claude API credits expire?
Yes. They refresh each billing cycle and expire at the end of it, with no rollover. Your Console billing page shows the amount and the expiry date. If you cancel or downgrade, new grants stop, but the balance you already have stays usable until it expires.
Does Claude Pro get free API credits?
No. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible. Only Max plans and Team plans, including discounted Team plans for nonprofits and scientists, receive the monthly grant. Even on an eligible plan, it appears only after 7 days with an account in good standing.
Do I need a credit card to get free Claude API access?
No. Anthropic says you do not need to add a credit card or any payment method on Claude Platform to claim or use the monthly grant. You link a Console organization and accept the Supplemental Credit Terms. Buying more Claude credits is a separate choice, and the free balance is spent before anything you purchase.
How do I get a Claude API key?
Sign in to the Claude Console (console.anthropic.com, also reachable at platform.claude.com), ideally with the same email you use on claude.ai. Open the organization you linked to your plan, go to API keys and click Create key. Keys from other organizations will not use the grant.
